NONUMENT 01: McKELDIN FOUNTAIN
A VIRTUAL MONUMENT TO FREE SPEECH, OCCUPATION, AND PROTEST IN BALTIMORE
November 16th, Nonument Group is presenting its award-winning augmented reality work Nonument01: Mckeldin Fountain at the Creative Time Summit X I Speaking Truth Summit in New York where the McKeldin Fountain will take over Washington Square Park.
Via augmented reality, this session takes participants to Baltimore on a virtual field trip to see the half-acre, Brutalist-style, multi-story utopian fountain that once boasted eighteen waterfalls, some as long as sixty feet. Wandering through the Inner Harbor’s utopian architectural feature—recently demolished in 2017 by the City of Baltimore and public-private partnerships—participants collect artefacts relating to Baltimoreans remembering Occupy Baltimore, BLM protests, marriage proposals, art events, ice skating, or hanging out. The session will walk to Washington Square Park and place the full-scale McKeldin Fountain in the Park for everyone to experience.
Nonument Group is an international multidisciplinary artist collective founded in 2011. Starting as a research group focusing on hidden, abandoned, unwanted or otherwise forgotten 20th-century monuments, architecture, and public spaces, the group has since carried out several artistic interventions in public spaces. The group’s research and artistic production address questions of memory, representation, semantics and other aspects of monumentalism, as well as attempts to publicly address the perception of public space and its role in everyday urban life.
Nonument Group in NYC are Lisa Moren, Martin Bricelj Baraga & Neja Tomšič.
